Hair Restoration with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Hair Restoration with PRP
A multimodal treatment approach for hair restoration is best. This type of treatment includes PRP treatment, hair growth/thickening shampoo & conditioner, and recommended supplements. Hair thinning can be a concern for our weight loss surgery patients. Generally, adequate protein intake and biotin are enough to prevent this. When these things aren’t doing the job (or a patient already has thinning hair or hair loss), our hair restoration procedure with PRP is a highly successful option.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Blood is made of four major components: white blood cells, red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. PRP is a platelet concentrated component from your own blood that contains nutrient rich cells and protein growth factors. In order to concentrate platelets, your blood is drawn and ran through a centrifuge. This process helps to build a large concentration of growth factors that are then used to help with hair restoration.
How PRP Helps Hair Restoration?
PRP for hair loss is a medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, then the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is reinjected into the scalp at the areas of concern. Modern research has shown that PRP can be used to help male or female pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia. The growth factors in the PRP help trigger natural hair growth by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft.
3 Steps for Hair Restoration with PRP
- Blood is drawn.
- A centrifuge is used to separate the blood into highly concentrated platelets (PRP).
- PRP is then injected into troublesome areas to help trigger natural hair growth.
